ARTIST STATEMENT
My work sustains tension, allowing sensation to simmer, swell, and spread. I examine ingestion as a metaphor for consumption and enterprise, focusing on the processes of absorbing, resisting, purging, and projecting through images, objects, installations, wearables, media, and performances.
Trigger points become sites of encounter where the body meets its surroundings, and seduction, damage, enmeshment, and control collide. I am interested in what happens when systems, identities, objects, and materials cannot stabilize, when something gets under the skin, sticks to the body, enters the image, or begins to fall apart.
BIO
Krysta Sa is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice examines the unstable relationship between bodies, commodity, images, materials, and systems of seduction. Working across photography, moving image, objects, installations, wearables, publishing, and performance, her work considers the body as a site of encounter and control. Sa earned an MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BFA in 2D Studies from Bowling Green State University. Based in Toledo, Ohio, she is the founder of Midwest Image Authority, a publishing and performance project rooted in Midwestern image culture, industrial landscapes, and sensation production. She has performed extensively in DIY spaces and makeshift galleries nationally. Additionally, her work has been seen at larger cultural and educational institutions and non-profit venues such as Vox Populi (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), The Anderson (Richmond, Virginia), Toledo Museum of Art (Toledo, Ohio), and the Winnipeg Underground Film Festival (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Sa was a recipient of a Merit Award from the Arts Commission of Toledo in Toledo, OH and the Digi Myths Grant from Soft Surplus in Brooklyn, NY.
